Alan Moore ~ Writing Seminar

Alan Moore

Alan Moore is an author that I never thought I would care about. Comic books were something that I thought was childish and something that catered to lower level readers. I have now been proven wrong, very wrong. I recently read one of his most famous comics “V For Vendetta” and I can safely say that I was very ignorant to believe that comics were not important. Comic books have just as much depth , story, and significance as normal novels and Alan Moore’s works have proved this. V For Vendetta showed me a different side to the normal hero stories. It introduces dark twists and elements such as weakness of the human mind that a lot of authors do not dare to go for. Moore completely changes my views on rebellion and social injustices with V For Vendetta and I feel it is a novel everyone should read before they pass away. Moore takes a “terrorist” and makes him out to be a symbol of justice in a way I would have never imagined. It truly makes us think about the relationship between the government and society in a way where you as an individual would start questioning your way of life. Unfortunately the fact that it has pictures and bubble text drives a lot of readers away and so I feel Alan Moore does not get the recognition he deserves for his novels. Another novel that proves his competence is “Watchmen”. This comic has earned many awards and has been placed on Time’s top 100 best novels. I now appreciate Alan Moore as a writer as he digs deep into places that a lot of authors wouldn’t dare to go, which has in turn influenced many people including myself. I will definitely be reading more of his work in the future.
